ToggleMy passion
So how did I even get to the point where I am writing an article about how to play soccer while traveling?
It all started with my passion for the game.
Football is my favorite sport and I have been playing it since I was a little kid.
I remember when I used to go out in the streets and play with my friends. We would make up our own rules and just have a blast.
Even though I’m not a professional player, the game has always been a big part of my life.
When I travel, I look for ways to play football.
It’s can be challenging as a digital nomad because I’m constantly on the move, but it’s doable with a little bit of creativity.
I have found some ways that have worked for me and I’m excited to share them with you.
Facebook it’s the first place I start
So you have reached a new destination, you have settled down in your accommodation and now you want to find a game of football.
The first thing I do is check Facebook.
There are tons of Facebook groups for football lovers all around the world.
You can search for groups in your city or country and see if any games are happening that you can join.
How to search for football groups on Facebook?
I recommend keeping it simple.
Enter in the Facebook search the name of the city you are in and then add the word “football” or “soccer” to it.
For example, “Paris football” or “London soccer”.
This should give you a good list of groups to choose from.
Pay attention: There are Facebook groups that you have to pay to play football with them.
Usually, it is in big cities that the organizers rent the soccer field and then charge a fee to the participants.
So make sure to read the description of the group before requesting to join.
What to do if there are no groups?
If there are no Facebook groups for football lovers in your city, don’t worry.
There are other ways to find a game.
Post a Facebook post on different groups
Another option is to post on different groups asking if anyone wants to play football.
It works well in groups of digital nomads.
This method has worked for me a few times, take a look at my example:
As you can see I kept it simple.
I just wrote that we are organizing a football game and I added a picture of a ball (Picture always attracts the eye)
Within a few minutes, I had some responses and we were able to organize a game.
This method also works in Couchsurfing groups and other similar groups.
Create a group by yourself
If you can’t find a group, why not create your own?
It’s easier than it sounds.
All you need to do is go on Facebook and create a new group.
Give it a name like “Football lovers in [your city]”.
Then write a short description of what the group is for and invite all your friends that live in that city.
Once the group has a few members, you can start organizing games.
It’s a great way to make new friends who share your passion for football.
Luck and some courage
The second way and this one is a little more complicated.
Go to a football field and see if there are already people playing.
If there are, approach them and ask if you can join the game.
This option requires a little bit of luck and some courage.
But it has worked for me more than once.
I have met some great people this way and then they called me the next time they played so it became easier and easier.
Tips for the first time
Now that you know how to play soccer while traveling, I want to give you a few tips for your first time.
1. Bring cash with you.
It already happened to me once that I missed the description of the Facebook group and only realized when I got there that it was a paid game.
So to avoid this, always bring some cash with you, just in case.
2. Search for a group in advance.
If you are traveling to a new city, it’s always a good idea to search for a football group in advance.
This way you will know if any games are happening during your stay and you can even contact the organizers to let them know you are coming.
3. Bring your own ball.
It’s not always easy to find a ball to play with, especially if you are in a small town or village.
So my advice is to always bring your own ball with you when you travel.
4. bottle of water.
Make sure to bring a bottle of water with you to stay hydrated during the game.
You prefer not to rely on other people’s water and you might not find a place to buy water nearby.
That way you will also avoid getting Covid-19.
Why play soccer or any sport while traveling solo?
There are a few reasons why I think playing soccer (or any sport) while traveling is a great idea.
First of all, it’s a great way to meet new people and overcome loneliness as a digital nomad.
You can make friends with locals and other travelers just by playing a game together.
It doesn’t matter if you’re good or bad at the sport, everyone can join in and have a good time.
Secondly, playing sports is a great way to stay active and healthy while traveling.
It’s easy to get lazy when you’re on the road, but if you make an effort to play sports regularly, you’ll feel so much better.
Finally, playing sports is just a lot of fun!
I always have a great time when I play football, even if I’m by myself.
HAVE FUN!
That’s it, it’s that simple.
Now go out there and have some fun playing football while traveling solo.
And if you have any other tips, please share them in the comments below. I would love to hear from you.
