Can You Really Work From The Beach?

a digital nomad working from the beach

Working from the beach may sound like a dream come true for some people. However, itโ€™s not always as easy or glamorous as you might think.

I tried to make it work when I worked remotely from Da Nang.
I was determined to be one of those people who got the perfect shot of their laptop and toes in the sand for Instagram.

But, my attempts ended in abject failure.

The Reality

The truth is that beachfront locations are not the most conducive environments for real work. Itโ€™s simply too distracting! (Especially if you have ADHD like me)

Even if you donโ€™t have any distractions, there are still a few other things to consider.

Sun glare on laptops or phones can be annoying and uncomfortable for extended periods of time.

Sand may also get into your devices, which can cause damage over time. And, of course, there is always the risk of sand getting inside your keyboard or ports.

So, can You really work on the beach with a laptop?

Yes, you can โ€“ but itโ€™s not ideal or practical.

If you want to work from the beach successfully, I recommend doing it in short bursts and keeping your devices clean and secure.

Tips for Working on the Beach

If you still want to work on the beach, a few tips can help you make it happen.

Invest in a good laptop sleeve.

Not only will it help protect your laptop from sand and sun glare, but it can also be a great way to keep your hands warm on cold beach days.

Stay aware of the ocean tides.

If you plan to work near the shore, make sure you factor in the tide so that you donโ€™t get soaked by a surprise wave.

Keep a small bottle of compressed air handy.

Using the compressed air after youโ€™re done can help prevent sand from getting inside your device.

Invest in a comfortable beach chair.

Working on the beach can be challenging if you donโ€™t have a comfortable place to sit. Get a beach chair that supports your back and allows you to maintain a comfortable working posture.

Use a portable power bank.

Since power outlets might be scarce on the beach, having a portable power bank can be a lifesaver. Make sure to charge it beforehand, so you can keep your devices powered up throughout your work session.

Opt for a waterproof phone case.

Accidents happen, and itโ€™s better to be safe than sorry.
A waterproof phone case will protect your phone from unexpected splashes or accidental drops in the water.

Plus, you can still use your phone while itโ€™s in the case, allowing you to stay connected and productive.

Bring a portable Wi-Fi hotspot.

While some beaches offer Wi-Fi access, itโ€™s not always reliable or available.

Consider investing in a portable Wi-Fi hotspot to ensure a stable internet connection for your work.
Research beforehand to find out which providers offer coverage in the beach area you plan to work in.

Pack a microfiber towel.

A microfiber towel is lightweight and highly absorbent, making it perfect for the beach.

It can quickly dry off your hands, wipe away sweat, or clean your laptop screen. Plus, it takes up minimal space in your bag.

Bring sunglasses.

Finally, bring sunglasses (UV protection), sunscreen, and a hatโ€”these items will help protect your eyes and skin from the sun.

Wrap Up

We all know the myths about working remotely from the beach. Itโ€™s supposed to be glamorous and inspiring. In reality, it is far from that. But with some common-sense precautions and the right gear, it is possible to make it work.

So, if youโ€™re feeling brave enough to take your laptop to the beach, you can make it happen.
