11 Common Digital Nomads Problems and How to Overcome Them

igital Nomads Problems

Reliable connection, productivity, Staying organized, and time differences are just a small part of the most common problems digital nomads should deal with while traveling.

As a digital nomad, I know first-hand how difficult it can be to stay productive and organized while working remotely.

From managing deadlines in different time zones and finding reliable internet access to staying connected with colleagues and clients worldwide, the challenges of digitally remote work can often seem impossible. But donโ€™t worry โ€“ Iโ€™m here to help! In this article, I will explore 10 common problems digital nomads experience working remotely. I have some tips and tricks that can make navigating the digital nomad lifestyle easier.

11 Problems Digital Nomads are facing with:

1. Establishing a reliable connection

Digital nomads must depend on their internet connections and mobile data plans to stay connected, which can be unreliable when traveling in countries or areas with poor signal strength. To ensure connection stability, digital nomads must research the best options in their current location and invest in a reliable wifi-hotspot or mobile plan.

As a digital nomad in Europe, I found that investing in a local SIM card with an unlimited data plan was the best way to ensure I had a stable Internet connection no matter where I was. Additionally, I used public Wi-Fi whenever possible in Cafes and Co-work places. Most of the time, the connection was great, but if I need a backup, I have my local SIM. Having a SIM card allowed me to stay connected at all times and enabled me to work from anywhere in Europe without any issues.

2. Digital Nomads Problems โ€“ Communicating with colleagues effectively

One of the struggles digital nomads face is staying in contact with their team remotely. (If you work as part of a team or even with some other freelancers). To stay connected, they must use various communication tools like Skype, Slack, and Zoom to keep conversations organized and professional. Additionally, digital nomads must ensure everyone is on the same page with expectations and deadlines. As a digital nomad, I use a weekly video call via Zoom or WhatsApp with my team to discuss progress and upcoming tasks, as well as group chats for quick updates or questions.

3. Maintaining productivity

Working remotely can be difficult for digital nomads, especially when transitioning between different time zones and locations.

One way to do this is by setting a consistent sleep schedule and ensuring you get enough rest. Additionally, digital nomads should create daily goals for themselves and take regular breaks to keep their energy levels up.

Finally, itโ€™s vital to ensure that your working environment is free from distractions so that you can stay focused on the task at hand. By following these steps, digital nomads can stay productive and get the most out of their workday.

Digital nomads should use productivity apps to keep track of projects and tasks. These apps can help digital nomads organize their day-to-day activities, manage deadlines more effectively, and ensure everything is completed on time.

I am using the Trello app to organize my tasks. It is a free tool. By taking advantage of these helpful resources, digital nomads can stay organized and increase their productivity while working remotely.

4. Digital Nomads Problems โ€“ Staying organized

Maintaining a business while working remotely can be difficultโ€“there are no physical reminders or colleagues to keep you on task. One way to stay organized is to create a calendar or system that works best for you and fits the needs of your lifestyle. This could be done using a digital calendar, an online planner, or a physical planner. Additionally, itโ€™s essential to set up reminders on your phone or in the form of post-it notes. This will help ensure that tasks and deadlines are not forgotten.

5. Reducing stress

Stress can be a significant obstacle when working remotely as a digital nomad.ย

One way to reduce stress is to ensure you take breaks throughout the day and get adequate rest. Additionally, itโ€™s essential to set realistic expectations and not be too hard on yourself when things donโ€™t go as planned. Finally, engaging in activities such as yoga or meditation can help digital nomads find balance and reduce stress levels. With these simple tips and tricks, digital nomads can reduce their stress levels while working remotely.

I have a morning routine that helps me stay focused and reduce stress. I wake up at 7 am every morning, drink a glass of water, and start Stretching training for 20 minutes. After this, I meditate for 12 minutes. Just lay on my Yoga mat, listen to meditation music and focus on my breaths. When I finish, I make myself a coffee and start my day.

6. Competing with distractions

ย Whether itโ€™s the sound of waves crashing or a temptation to explore new places, digital nomads can quickly become distracted from work when traveling.

To stay focused, digital nomads should set small goals every day and allow themselves to take a break after they have achieved them. Additionally, digital nomads should try to work in environments that are free from distractions โ€“ this could be a coffee shop or even a coworking space.

My way to competing with distraction is a tool that I explored just this year. You can find this tool on Youtube โ€“ Pomodoro timer. This tool includes excellent music that helps to concentrate and manage my time. I use the 50 minutes timer, and after it, the tool changes the music, which helps me know better when to have a break. Also, the music helps you stay focused.

7. Finding spaces to work

Not all locations are suitable for working remotely, so digital nomads must find places with reliable internet connections, comfortable environments, and other amenities to stay productive. One way to find the perfect space is to use online resources such as local Facebook groups or online forums. Here digital nomads can find out about local coworking spaces, cafes, and other places that offer reliable internet access. Additionally, many cities now have a variety of coworking spaces specifically designed for digital nomads โ€“ these often provide amenities such as reliable internet, comfortable seating, and various other resources. With some research and exploration, finding the perfect space to work while traveling is possible!

I like to use Nomad 10 app. This app includes a lot of important information for digital nomads about almost every place in the world: Where to work, where to hang out, meet other nomads, and more.

8. Working with different time zones

If a digital nomadโ€™s clients or colleagues span multiple time zones, it can be challenging to find the right times for meetings. To make this easier, digital nomads should use online tools that allow for easy coordination across different time zones, such as Calendly or World Time Buddy. Additionally, digital nomads can set up automated reminders to ensure everyone is aware of the times they need to be available. With these tools, working with people in different time zones is much simpler. I also use Calendly and World Time Buddy combined with Google Calendar to arrange meetings at the most convenient time for both parties. It helps me stay organized and connected with my colleagues and clients worldwide.

9. Dealing with loneliness

Working remotely can be isolating for digital nomads who have different social interactions than traditional office workers. To combat loneliness, digital nomads should try to stay connected with colleagues and clients through email, text messages, or video calls.

Additionally, digital nomads can also take advantage of coworking spaces and local meetups to connect with other remote workers and make new friends. Some applications, like Nomad List, allow digital nomads to connect with others in the same city or country. This helps me stay connected and get help from other digital nomads with more experience.

10. Managing finances

It can be difficult to manage finances when working from different countries and dealing with different currencies. To help manage finances, digital nomads should set up a budget and monitor their financial health regularly. This can include tracking expenses, setting up automatic bill payments, and using different tools to exchange currencies efficiently.

Additionally, digital nomads should consider signing up for international banking accounts that offer multi-currency support to simplify moving money around. I use Transferwise to manage my finances and avoid most banksโ€™ high currency exchange fees. It helps me stay on top of my finances while traveling.

11. Maintaining work/life balance

Digital nomads must be disciplined to achieve a healthy work/life balance while living and working remotely. This can include setting boundaries between work and personal life, ensuring enough rest throughout the day, and taking regular breaks to relax and recharge.

Additionally, digital nomads should plan occasional trips or vacations to explore new places and create memories with family or friends. With effort and dedication, digital nomads can maintain a balanced lifestyle and still succeed in their work. I set clear boundaries between my work hours and personal time, so I can enjoy both activities without feeling overwhelmed.

Final words

Overall, the life of a digital nomad can be both rewarding and challenging. By tackling common problems such as ineffective communication, staying organized, loneliness, and maintaining work/life balance, digital nomads can overcome these obstacles and enjoy their unique lifestyles.

Anyone can become a remote worker with the right tools, strategies, and dedication to success. Iโ€™m living proof of that, and I know many other digital nomads who have found success while working remotely. If you are considering a life as a digital nomad, donโ€™t be afraid to take the plunge โ€“ it might just be the best decision of your life!
